Australia's air travel industry, like many others, has been greatly influenced by the digital revolution, with various apps vying for the attention of travelers. In the first quarter of 2021, five noteworthy apps demonstrated notable trends in downloads and weekly active users, according to data from Sensor Tower.
Qantas Airways showed a consistent increase in both downloads and active users throughout the quarter. Downloads rose from 6K in the last week of December 2020 to nearly 8K by the end of March 2021. Weekly active users followed a similar trajectory, increasing from 40K to 42K over the same period.
The Velocity Frequent Flyer app experienced a significant spike in downloads in the third week of January, reaching 34K before settling back to a range between 1K and 2K for the remainder of the quarter. Weekly active users peaked at 23K in January, before gradually declining to 8K by the close of March.
For Virgin Australia entertainment, downloads started at 5K at the end of December and saw an upward trend, culminating at 7K in the last week of March. The app's weekly active users also saw an increase from 22K to almost 24K in the first quarter.
The Flightradar24 | Flight Tracker app's revenue showed some fluctuation but generally hovered around 7K USD per week throughout the quarter. Downloads had a slight drop from 5K to 3K in early February but recovered to nearly 5K by the end of March. Weekly active users experienced a dip in February but otherwise remained fairly stable, ending the quarter with 22K active users.
Lastly, the Jetstar app saw a gradual increase in downloads, from 3K in the last week of December to over 5K by the end of March. Weekly active users also grew, starting at 5K and rising to close to 8K by the quarter's end.
